The Complete Guide to Self Tan

Everything you need to know about self-tanning – from choosing the right product to making your tan last as long as possible. Whether you are a beginner or experienced, you will find tips and techniques that make a real difference.

What is self tan?

Self tan is a cosmetic product that gives the skin a sun-kissed glow without exposure to UV rays. The active ingredient in most self-tanning products is DHA (dihydroxyacetone) – a sugar that reacts with amino acids in the outermost layer of the skin to create a natural, bronzed tone.

Unlike a suntan, which damages the skin and increases the risk of skin harm, self tan is a gentle alternative that delivers the same golden results without the downsides. The colour develops over 2–12 hours and typically lasts 5–7 days before gradually fading as the outer skin cells naturally renew.

Different types of self tan

Self tan comes in several formats, each with its own advantages:

Mousse – The most popular format. Mousse is easy to spread evenly, dries quickly and gives a controlled result. Ideal for both beginners and experienced users.

Mist/Spray – A fine spray applied directly to the skin. Great for hard-to-reach areas and quick application. Available as a gradual tan for a subtle build-up.

Drops – Self tan drops that blend into your daily moisturiser. They allow a gradual build-up of colour and are easy to customise in intensity.

Lotion – A creamy consistency applied like a moisturiser. Provides good hydration but can be harder to distribute evenly.

Water – A thin, water-based formula that absorbs quickly. Leaves no sticky residue but may produce uneven results.

Oil – An oil infused with self-tanning ingredients. Delivers a luminous finish and extra hydration, but takes longer to dry.

How do I choose the right self tan?

Choosing the right self tan depends on your skin type, experience level and desired outcome:

Beginners: Start with a mousse or a gradual tan mist. These products are forgiving and deliver an even result even if your technique is not quite perfect.

Sensitive skin: Opt for alcohol-free products with mild ingredients. Alcohol-free formulas will not dry out the skin and provide a softer, more natural fade.

Quick results: A mousse with guide colour (a temporary bronzer) shows exactly where you have applied and develops full colour within 6–8 hours.

Subtle glow: Gradual tan products such as mist or drops build colour over time and are perfect for those who prefer a more understated bronze.

Preparation – the key to a great result

The most important step for a flawless self tan is preparation:

Exfoliate your skin 24 hours before application. Pay extra attention to dry areas such as elbows, knees, ankles and hands. This creates a smooth, even surface and helps the colour adhere uniformly.

Avoid moisturiser immediately before application – it can create a barrier that prevents DHA from reacting with the skin. Your skin should be clean, dry and free from oils.

Shave or wax at least 24 hours beforehand. Open pores can absorb more product and create dark spots.

How to apply self tan

Application technique varies depending on the product, but the core principles remain the same:

Use an application mitt for an even finish. Start with your legs and work your way up. Use circular motions and make sure every area is covered evenly. Apply sparingly to dry areas – elbows, knees, ankles and the backs of your hands need less product.

Allow the product to dry completely (5–10 minutes) before getting dressed. Avoid sweating, water and exercise during the development time.

Aftercare – making your self tan last longer

A solid aftercare routine can significantly extend the life of your self tan:

Moisturise daily with a fragrance-free, alcohol-free moisturiser. Well-hydrated skin retains colour longer and fades more evenly.

Avoid prolonged soaking – long baths, hot tubs and saunas can accelerate fading. Short showers with lukewarm water are best.

Do not exfoliate for the first 2–3 days. Once the colour begins to fade, you can gently exfoliate to prepare for your next application.
