Step-by-step guide
How to apply self tan without streaks
Complete guide with 10 steps and professional tips for an even, natural self tan every time.
Applying self tan doesn’t have to be complicated. With the right technique and preparation, you can achieve an even, natural-looking tan – completely free from streaks, patches or unwanted orange tones. Here we walk you through the entire process step by step.
10 steps to a perfect self tan
- 1
Exfoliate the night before
Start by exfoliating your entire body with a gentle scrub or exfoliating mitt. Pay extra attention to dry areas like elbows, knees, ankles and feet. Exfoliation removes dead skin cells and creates a smooth surface that helps self tan adhere evenly.
- 2
Shave or wax well in advance
If you shave or wax, do so at least 24 hours before application. Freshly shaved skin has open pores that can absorb extra product and create dark spots. Give your skin time to settle.
- 3
Shower and skip the moisturiser
Shower with lukewarm water and avoid applying moisturiser, oils or fragrance afterwards. Your skin should be completely clean and dry – product residue can create a barrier that leads to uneven results.
- 4
Put on an application mitt
A mitt is the key to even application. It distributes the product evenly, prevents staining on your palms and gives you control. Never apply self tan with bare hands.
- 5
Apply in sections – start with your legs
Pump a moderate amount of product onto the mitt. Start with your legs and work upwards – calves, thighs, stomach, chest, arms, back. Use circular, sweeping motions to distribute the product evenly.
- 6
Go easy on dry areas
Elbows, knees, ankles, hands and feet need far less product. These areas absorb more DHA and can quickly become too dark. Use the product already remaining on the mitt – lightly sweep over without adding more.
- 7
Face – mix with moisturiser
Mix a small amount of self tan with your regular moisturiser (50/50) for a more subtle, natural result on your face. Avoid eyebrows, hairline and around the nose – these areas can collect product.
- 8
Let it dry completely before getting dressed
Wait at least 10 minutes, preferably longer, before putting on clothes. Loose-fitting, dark clothing is best for the first few hours. Avoid tight garments that can rub the product off unevenly.
- 9
Stay away from water
Avoid sweating, rain and showering throughout the entire development time (usually 6–8 hours, or overnight). Water interrupts the DHA reaction and can cause patches.
- 10
Rinse off and moisturise
Once the development time is complete, shower with lukewarm water – skip soap or shower gel the first time. Pat your skin dry with a towel (don’t rub). Then apply a generous amount of alcohol-free moisturiser.
Pro tips
Apply in the evening
Let the self tan develop while you sleep. You’ll wake up with a finished tan without having to wait around during the day.
Use a mirror and good lighting
Apply in a well-lit room and use a mirror to make sure you haven’t missed any spots.
Build up gradually
Better a thin layer you can build on than a thick one that gives uneven results. You can always add another layer the next day.
